I couldn’t shake off the feeling.
What’s wrong with me? I wondered as I chatted with my friend, Angela.
There was this itch to eat a certain something, but I couldn’t quite put my finger on it. My cravings were getting stronger and stronger, each item that I thought might be what I was craving rifled through my head rejected. And then, I figured it out–
I wanted to eat a crepe.
Here in little ol’ Torrance, crepes are not plentiful. There are places that offer crepes, but they’re usually too yolky, too thick, or the crepe itself has to be slathered with toppings because of how awful they’ve made it. Disappointed, I was about to give up on having this delicious dessert (I only get dessert crepes, dunno how savory crepes are!) because I was not in the mood to drive a long distance, but my prayers were answered.
In Gardena, where Marukai used to be, opened a new store called Tokyo Central that boasted a small food court that– you guessed it– featured a shop that sold crepes. With crepes on my mind, and my desire to shove one in my mouth, I dragged my friend along with me to get some.
A small shop, Harajuku Crepe is near the entrance of Tokyo Plaza and is aesthetically pleasing. With two small crepe pans, a counter to put toppings on, and a small storage room in the back, along with the cash register, the kiosk looked chic without looking way too hipster. Fortunately there weren’t too many customers around, so my friend and I got our orders quickly.
Because this was my first time going here, I wanted to start off with a crepe that is a staple of mine: a regular crepe with nutella, banana, whipped cream, and vanilla ice cream, though I also added cornflakes for that crunch factor. Simple, but good. My friend, however, was more adventurous and got an Earl Grey crepe skin (which turned out very pleasing, by the way!), with nutella, banana, whipped cream, coffee ice cream, and almonds.
As we watched the worker meticulously cook, prep, and fold the crepes, I was fascinated on how this one worker was able to man the register, put in more orders after us, still keep a watch on our crepes, make ours while starting to make other customers, and still have a calming disposition.
Dang, pro.
Once my friend and I received our crepes, it was hard not to salivate and take a huge bite into this delicious dessert. Warm and fresh, my hands shook in anticipation as I snapped a quick photo of the food before biting into the crepe, not minding that I also ate some of the parchment paper.
The crepe skin was light, slightly crunchy at the edge, and had a chewy texture that was pleasing. The crunch of the unsweetened cornflakes paired well with the soft, ripe banana, but I found myself wishing there was just a tad more nutella to highlight that sinful, but oh-so-delightful combo of chocolate and banana. The vanilla ice cream didn’t have a chance to even melt with how fast I was gobbling mine down… And my friend was no different. We both relished our desserts with the short span of time it took, and waddled back to my car, satisfied.
Out of the creperies around here, Harajuku Crepe has it going on. There is another place I would recommend, but that’s for another restaurant review.
Overall, Harajuku Crepe does boast a very satisfying dessert crepe, and will probably still have the skills, ingredients, and love to make an awesome savory crepe! I highly recommend trying this place if you are a crepe fan and in need of one if you’re around this area… And it doesn’t hurt that you can also grab lunch or dinner here, too, since there are other kiosks around.
